A bargeman with Shire barge horse. Barge horses, including breeds like Shires and Clydesdales, were essential for pulling cargo-laden canal barges from the 1740s until the early 20th century, providing a reliable and efficient transport method. Operating along towpaths, they allowed for far greater loads to be moved compared to road transport, often managed by a horseman as part of the boat crew.
