Historical Background
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, Canadian National Railway unveiled two specially painted GE ES44AC locomotives for its extensive U.S. operations. Locomotive #1776, named "Screaming Eagle," features a dramatic patriotic livery centred around the American bald eagle, symbolising freedom, strength, and the enduring partnership between Canada and the United States. The locomotive was introduced alongside sister unit CN #2026 "Air Force One," creating one of the most talked-about locomotive pairs in modern railroading.
Rather than serving as display locomotives, both commemorative units entered regular freight service across Canadian National's network throughout the United States, leading intermodal, manifest and general freight trains while attracting widespread attention from railfans wherever they travelled. Their unique liveries quickly established them as some of the most photographed locomotives of 2026.
The GE ES44AC "Evolution Series" (GEVO) is one of the most successful freight locomotives of the modern era. Introduced in 2005, its 4,400-horsepower GEVO-12 diesel engine meets stringent emissions standards while delivering exceptional reliability and fuel efficiency. Today, the ES44AC remains a cornerstone of freight operations across North America, making it an essential locomotive for any contemporary N Scale railroad.
