History:
The LNER ‘Toad E’ brake van was developed during the 1930s as an improved version of the earlier ‘Toad B’ design. Externally, the most obvious change was the introduction of distinctive pressed-steel side duckets in place of the earlier wooden examples, giving guards improved visibility along the length of the train.
Built in large numbers, many passed into British Railways ownership at nationalisation in 1948, where they continued to operate across the Eastern and North Eastern Regions on unfitted freight services before gradually being replaced by the standard BR brake van designs during the 1950s and 1960s.
