History:
The 'Toad E' brake van was introduced by the LNER during the early 1930s as a development of the earlier Toad B design. While retaining the same basic body and chassis, it featured distinctive pressed-steel side duckets in place of the earlier wooden boarded type, giving the vehicle a more modern appearance.
Around 900 examples were built between 1930 and 1935, making it the LNER's principal short-wheelbase brake van of the period. They became a familiar sight on freight trains throughout the former LNER network and remained in widespread service under British Railways, with many surviving until around 1960
