History
The Class 37s were designed for both passenger and freight haulage and prior to the introduction of TOPS in the early 1970s were known as English Electric Type 3s. D6865 entered service in August 1963 and was first allocated to Landore Depot at Swansea, running in BR green with small yellow warning panels.
From December 1966 it moved to York and in January 1969 received air brakes and had its steam heating boiler removed, effectively making it suitable only as a freight engine, and was repainted into BR blue with full yellow ends in the following June. It was later received the numbers 37165 and 37374, and was condemned in 2008 after almost 45 years’ service.
