History
Thirty of Bulleid’s three-cylinder ‘Merchant Navy’ Class were built at Eastleigh in three batches between 1941 and 1949. No. 35028 was one of the last batch, ordered by the Southern Railway just prior to nationalisation in 1948 and therefore completed under British Railways. No. 35028 was finished in December 1948, including the newer, wedge-shape cab fronts from new. Rebuilt from air-smoothed condition in 1959, ‘Clan Line’ was allocated to Nine Elms and hauled prestigious expresses such as the ‘Bournemouth Belle’ and ‘Atlantic Coast Express’. Retired in July 1967, the locomotive is preserved by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Society and regularly hauls trains on the main line."
