Product Description

Continuing our ‘What If’ theme – British Railways inherited 33 ex-Highland Railway locomotives but the ‘Big Goods’ were not among them (aside from preserved pioneer No. 103). The LMS withdrew the last, No. 17925, in February 1940. We wondered what it might have looked like had the LMS kept it going for a few more years and it had become a BR engine. As the ‘Big Goods’ worked passenger as well as goods trains, we thought it would have received lined rather than plain black.

Rapido have announced that they're making a 'OO' gauge model of the Highland Railway’s famous 'Jones Goods' 4-6-0!

Although they’re often called ‘Jones Goods’ after Highland Chief Engineer David Jones, it was his Chief Draughtsman, David Anderson Hendrie, who proposed that the railway could benefit from the 4-6-0 wheel arrangement that was becoming common in other countries.

The result was the first 4-6-0 design to run in Britain. Sharp Stewart of Glasgow delivered all 15 during 1894. The last was withdrawn in 1940 but the LMS saved pioneer No. 103, which, having worked railtours in the 1960s, is now on display in Glasgow's Riverside Museum.

Rapido's Jones Goods has the usual high specification you’d expect from a Rapido model:
  • Firebox flicker
  • Flush smokebox
  • No smokebox wing plates
  • Drummond chimney and Caley style smokebox door
  • Short tender tank – no toolbox
  • Ross ‘pop’ safety valves
  • Tablet catcher
  • 21-pin decoder socket
  • Spring buffers
  • Museum quality paint finish
  • Factory-fitted sound speaker
  • Smooth & powerful mechanism
  • Highly detailed
  • NEM coupler pockets
