1938 Stock

Over 1100 cars of 1938 stock were built for London Underground with additional cars continued to be built into the 1950s.Ā

The 1938 stock was revolutionary in both its styling and being the first underground stock with all the equipment located under the floor (rather than in cabinets above the sole bars). The 1938 stock were used on the Bakerloo, Northern, Piccadilly, East London and Central lines at various points in their life – perhaps being most noted for running on the Bakerloo and Northern lines until the 1980s.Ā

Following withdrawal of last 1938 stock sets in 1988, 20 cars were sold to BR for refurbishment and use on the Isle of Wight as Class 483 2-car units.

In 1988, ten sets of 1938 stock were bought byĀ  Network SouthEast Ā for use on theĀ  Island Line service on theĀ  Isle of Wight , and were allocated two-carĀ  TOPS Ā  Class 483 . These units were heavily rebuilt and introduced between 1989 and 1992 to replace the even olderĀ  Class 485 and 486 Ā trains that had been running on the line since 1967, also constructed from ex-Tube stock. Four sets have been scrapped and the other six have been withdrawn, with the final service running on the 3 January 2021. Ā As of January 2021, on withdrawal, the Class 483s were the oldest stock in mainline usage in the United Kingdom, aged 82 years.
