About The Titfield Thunderbolt
Few films have captured the romance of the railways quite like The Titfield Thunderbolt. Released in 1953, this beloved, classic Ealing comedy has cemented its place as one of the most iconic railway films of all time.
An altogether British David vs Goliath tale - the film tells the heartwarming story of locals banding together to save their branch line after the government threatens to close it. In this case the steam locomotive becomes the main character, a symbol of defiance against the odds! The story was inspired by the group of enthusiasts, led by Tom Rolt, who took over the 2ft 3in gauge Talyllyn Railway in 1951 and thus kick-started the railway preservation movement.
Directed by Charles Crichton and produced by Ealing Studios, the film brings together humor, nostalgia, and British eccentricity in a perfect blend to create a seminal railway film. Over the past 70+ years, The Titfield Thunderbolt, has continued to be a fan favourite amongst railway enthusiasts and modellers alike.
