Prototype Information

• The Stockton and Darlington Railway. – the birthplace of the modern railway and now home to several important rail locations, including the Locomotion Museum. After coming under NER (and later LNER) ownership, parts of the original line can still be followed on the SDR trail, with much of the original route still in use as the Tees Valley line.

• The Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway. – celebrating 200 years since opening in 2026, the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway was the first public railway in Scotland, and the first in Scotland to use locomotive power successfully. Similar to the S&DR, the line has come under new ownership several times in history, however now only a short length of the original route remains in use between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

• The Liverpool and Manchester Railway. – perhaps one of the most famous early railway lines, the L+MR was a pioneering powerhouse. The L+MR’s list of railway firsts includes being the first inter-city railway in the world, the first railway to rely exclusively on steam power, the first to be an entirely dual track line throughout its length, the first to have a true signalling system, and the first to be fully timetabled. 2026 also marks 200 years since the passing of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Act of 1826.
