Dapol have revealed CAD images for their newly tooled range of GWR 28xx/ 2884 Class 2-8-0 steam locomotives in OO Gauge!

Whilst the team are still reviewing and making some final detail tweaks to the CADs the overall feeling is a very positive one with how this model is going to look and perform.

A total of seven different models are to be produced covering the full lifespan of these popular Great Western freight locomotives in GWR green and BR black liveries. Each one can be specified either DCC ready, DCC fitted or DCC Sound fitted.

We do not currently have an estimated delivery date for these but they are expected sometime in 2025. All models are available to pre-order now!

A slide in PCB offers simple ‘tool-free’ installation of a NEXT-18 DCC decoder and a ’no-solder’ speaker connection. This board slides through the smoke box door and connects directly to the locomotive mother board.

The tender to locomotive drawbar includes reliable electrical connections moulded within the close-coupling push-fit coupling. This eliminates wired plugs and unreliable wiper style connections.

The locomotive and tender have electrical pick-up on all driving and tender wheels

An optional bass reflex speaker can be fitted into the tender. An audio frequency filter is integrated within the main locomotive PCB to ensure each speaker reproduces within it’s ideal frequency range (Factory fitted models only)

Firebox glow (synchronised with sound on factory fitted models)

Dapol’s proven slow speed mechanism and high torque motor

Enhance your driving experience with  RealDrive (on factory fitted sound models)

The front pony truck is also sprung and operates on a cam so the model will negotiate R2 curves with ease

The Great Western Railway (GWR) 2800 Class is a class of 2-8-0 steam locomotive. The class was designed by George Jackson Churchward for heavy freight work. They were the first 2-8-0 locomotive class in Great Britain.

The prototype, originally numbered 97 but later renumbered 2800, appeared in 1903. No. 97 undertook two years of trials before going into production. Initial results suggested that only the front end needed further development. The most visible difference between No. 97 and the first of the 1905 production batch was the higher pitch of the boiler.

Superheating was incorporated into the class from 1909 with No. 2808 the first to be retro-fitted. Other modifications centred on improving the weight distribution, altering smokebox lengths and fitting larger diameter chimneys.

The 84 2800s built by Churchward remained the GWR's principal long haul freight engines throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Six 2800 Class locomotives survive.
