Bachmann have announced plans to re-run two of their super popular OO9 Narrow Gauge Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST steam locomotives - 'Alice' and 'Britomart'.

Previously released to high acclaim, these models are making a return, offering even more modellers the chance to add a touch of narrow gauge charm to their layouts. Whether you’re modelling the industrial quarry lines or simply love the look of these distinctive little locomotives, the Hunslet 0-4-0ST is a must-have.

Barely larger than a 9V battery, this diminutive model still packs a punch with its diecast boiler and running plate, accompanied by a wealth of separately fitted details including handrails, valves, springs, brake shoes and cab controls. The 0-4-0ST wheel formation is faithfully modelled, with authentically-profiled wheels running in metal bearings ensuring smooth running, powered by a coreless motor with flywheel, and with a 6 Pin DCC decoder socket for those wishing to use the models with a DCC system. NEM coupling pockets feature at both ends, into which standard OO9 scale couplings are fitted.

‘ALICE’ HISTORY (with grateful thanks to The Quarry Hunslet website)

Built in 1902 with works number 780, ‘Alice’ is the sister engine to Holy War (No. 779). She worked at the Dinorwic Quarries until about 1960. She was then used for spare parts at the quarry and purchased as a source of spare parts by the then-owner of Holy War. In 1977 the remaining parts were gathered together at the Bala Lake Railway.

In 1987 the remains were purchased by Chris Scott and work started on restoration. The remains were later moved to the owner’s garage, the Ffestiniog Railway and then to the Leighton Buzzard Railway who agreed to finance the new boiler. Alice returned to steam in 1994.

‘BRITOMART’ HISTORY (with grateful thanks to The Quarry Hunslet website)

Britomart moved to the Ffestiniog Railway in 1965 after a working life at the Pen-yr-Orsedd Quarry in the Nantlle Vale in North Wales. The engine is typical of the small Hunslet 0-4-0STs built by Hunslet of Leeds for quarries in North Wales. Britomart is owned by a private consortium and is housed and steamed on special occasions at the Ffestiniog Railway.
