British Railways constructed around 600 'Suburban' coaches as part of their Mark 1 coach family of vehicles. They were produced on the short 57ft 11" frame and were used across the country on short local passenger workings.

The construction of these vehicles were given less importance than their mainline counterparts, so construction began in 1954. The vehicles exclusively used compartment bodystyles, with six different variations produced. They last operated a service train in 1977.
