At Rails of Sheffield, we're always looking for ways to improve your shopping experience. That's why we've introduced Purple Dot, our new preorder system designed to make ordering upcoming releases easier, more flexible, and more transparent than ever before.


The new system brings a range of benefits, including the ability to purchase in-stock and preorder items in a single transaction, manage your preorder details online, and receive clearer updates on your upcoming orders. It also lays the foundation for exciting future enhancements, including expanded Bespoke service options on eligible preorders.


Since launching the new system, we've received a number of questions from customers wanting to know how it works and what it means for their existing and future preorders. To help, we've put together answers to some of the most commonly asked questions below.

1️⃣ SINGLE CHECKOUT FOR IN-STOCK & PRE-ORDER ITEMS

With Purple Dot, you will no longer need to check out separately for in stock and pre-order items on our website - as they will all be unified into one process!

📝 UPDATE YOUR DETAILS MORE EASILY

We will be offering a simpler way to update your card details, addresses and other information - right up to the point of your item processing.

👀 INSTANT ACCESS TO YOUR PRE-ORDER HISTORY

There will be no more waiting for your preorders to appear, as you will be able to view details of any pre-orders you've made immediately using the Purple Dot portal.

☔️ BESPOKE OPTIONS AVAILABLE ON PRE-ORDERS

Finally, you will also be able to specify Rails Bespoke item customisations such as weathering, digital/ sound fittings and more where applicable. This isn't available right now but will be available during the full rollout.

What is Purple Dot?

Purple Dot is our new preorder platform, designed to make managing preorders easier and more transparent. It gives you greater control over your preorder, allows you to view your preorder history online, and makes it easier to update your details if anything changes before your item arrives.

Why are Rails of Sheffield changing to Purple Dot?

We're introducing Purple Dot to improve the overall preorder experience. It allows customers to check out with both in-stock and preorder items together, manage their preorder details more easily, and access their preorder information instantly.

Can I order in-stock and preorder items together?

Yes. One of the biggest improvements is that you can now check out with both in-stock and preorder items in a single transaction rather than placing separate orders via separate checkout systems.

How do I know if an item is a preorder?

Products available for preorder will clearly display their expected arrival or dispatch information on the product page before you place your order. There is also a blue ‘Pre-order’ icon shown on product listings.

When will I be charged for my preorder?

Our preorder payment time remains the same, we will only charge you once the item has arrived in stock and is ready to ship to you. Certain items may be subject to a small deposit at the time of placing the preorder, but this is limited to certain exclusive lines.

Can I view my preorder after placing it?

Yes. You'll be able to access your preorder details immediately through the Purple Dot portal.

Can I change my delivery address after placing a preorder?

Yes. Purple Dot allows you to update delivery information before your order is processed, making it much easier if you've moved house or need to change where the order is sent.

Can I update my payment details?

Yes. If your card expires or your payment details change, you'll be able to update them through the preorder management system. We always recommend that you keep your payment details up to date to ensure we can seamlessly ship your order once it arrives in stock.

Will I receive updates about my preorder?

Yes. If we need to change anything or for any unfortunate cancellations, we’ll be in touch. Stay tuned to our website blogs, product pages, and emails for any project updates and arrival date expectations.

What happens if the manufacturer changes the release date?

Model railway manufacturers occasionally revise production schedules. If this happens, we'll aim to keep you informed and update the estimated arrival date where possible.

Can I cancel a preorder?

Cancellation options will depend on the stage of the preorder and the specific product. Please refer to our preorder terms or contact our customer service team if you need assistance.

Can I order multiple preorder items in the same order?

Yes. You can add multiple preorder products to your basket and complete checkout in the usual way.

Will my preorder guarantee I receive the item?

Placing a preorder reserves your place in the queue for incoming stock. As with any manufacturer-supplied product, fulfilment remains subject to the quantity supplied to us, but preordering gives you the best opportunity to secure popular releases. 

At Rails we highly recommend that you preorder any releases you’re looking to buy, as these days manufacturers base their orders around the number of preorders that have been placed by retailers - so once the products have shipped there are usually very few remaining to order after the fact.

Can I add Bespoke services to preorders?

In the future, as part of the full rollout, selected preorder products will support Bespoke options such as weathering, DCC fitting, sound fitting and other customisation services where applicable. While this isn’t available right now, it’s something we’re working on for the near future.

I already have preorders with Rails. What happens to them?

Existing preorders placed before the introduction of Purple Dot will continue to be processed as normal. The new system will apply to eligible preorders going forward. Eventually, all customer preorders will migrate through to Purple Dot.
