By the late-1980s these large 2-10-2 machines had come to dominate China’s main lines, hauling the vast majority of freight trains and a considerable number of passenger services too. However, China soon moved towards diesel and electric traction and quickly the QJs were being displaced from primary and secondary services, resulting in many entering private and industrial ownership including several that were offloaded to the Jitong Railway in Inner Mongolia where the QJ’s remained in operation until 2005.
