Product description

The Midland Class 4F was a class of steam locomotive which epitomised British goods engine design of the time with traditional 0-6-0 wheel arrangement preferred for freight work. Henry Fowler, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Midland Railway, introduced the first two goods engines in 1911.

After the Grouping in 1923, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway continued to build the locomotives until 1941 with but a few minor changes to the design. These were built with left-hand drive whereas the Midland Railway version retained its original right-hand drive. The new-bullt LMS lot were given the new Fowler flat-sided tender, with the exception of the first ten, which received second-hand Johnson tenders.

Prior to Grouping, 192 locomotives entered Midland Railway service with a further five being built for use on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway. The S&DJR stock was transferred to the LMS in 1930. The 192 engines in this class were withdrawn between 1954 and 1965. One locomotive of the Midland Railway variant has survived into preservation, namely, No.43924 and is based on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
