During the First World War narrow gauge railways were used extensively in France and Belgium to transport equipment, munitions and men to the front line. They were also utilised on the return journey, carrying injured troops and used equipment.

After hostilities ceased, a number of the locomotives and wagons were sold to private owners and light railways across the world including the Ashover light railway in Derbyshire and the Welsh Highland Railway in Gwynedd. Furthermore, a number of locomotives were sold to owners in India where they worked until the 1980s, a tribute to their simple yet rugged design.
