The original streamlined form of the class arose from tests on Stanier's development of the Princess Royal class locomotives. When the opportunity to produce five conventional versions of the Coronation Pacific as a comparison to the streamlined version arose, Stanier was quoted as saying, 'They can have their streamliners if they b***** want them, but we will also build them five proper ones' such was his lack of interest in a streamlined locomotive specifically.

Those first five conventional locomotives were 6230 Duchess of Buccleuch to 6234 Duchess of Abercorn, colloquially known as Duchesses, after the first of this sub-class. Appearing in 1938 with a single chimney and without smoke deflectors, many purists regard these as the finest Pacific locomotives ever produced. The next four Duchesses to appear were 6249-6252 in 1944 and they emerged from works with a double chimney.

Originally ordered as streamlined, the demands of maintaining the streamlined form exceeded the cost savings in coal and so they emerged from works without the casing, but with streamlined tenders (which had been completed before that decision was taken). In 1946 the next three Duchesses, 6253-6255, differed in appearance again, this time the curved fall plate at the front was replaced by a split platform and smoke deflectors were fitted.

The process of de-streamlining the remaining engines began with 6235 City of Birmingham in April 1946, with 6243 City of Lancaster being the last in May 1949.

The next four Duchesses to appear were 6249-6252 in 1944 and they emerged from works with a double chimney.Originally ordered as streamlined, the demands of maintaining the streamlined form exceeded the cost savings in coal and so they emerged from works without the casing, but with streamlined tenders (which had been completed before that decision was taken).

Locomotives that had streamlining removed had a distinctive slant to the leading edge of the top of the smokebox, where this was previously hidden by the panels and designed to accommodate them. Eventually the raked smokeboxes were replaced with conventional smokeboxes, so that by late 1958 the majority of the fleet showed a similar appearance for the first time.

Duchess of Abercorn entered LMS service in 1938 in the LMS Crimson Lake livery. Before nationalisation however the locomotive is said to have been painted into a solid blue-grey colour, the only such example to allegedly receive this paint job however no photos confirm this. Duchess of Abercorn would then go on to be painted in two different liveries under BR and be renumbered from 6234 to 46234. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk brakes and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. The coaches, being relatively new at the time of nationalisation lasted well into the swansong days of BR, appearing in both its carmine and cream livery and later BR Maroon when BR decided to shift aesthetics back to regional recognition.

Length - 14.4cm, Width - 2.2cm, Height - 3cm

1:120 Scale

Gauge: TT

Minimum Curve (mm): Radius 3

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_9655_9eb44d6c-72d3-477c-b855-28099eb650b0.jpg?v=1717423375
hornby-tt4040-gwr-mk3-trailer-first-41146
TT4040 GWR Mk3 Trailer First 41146

In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's Victorian era railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways. By 1926, they were the company’s group standard type. Fifty-two more locomotives were built; 38 at Doncaster Works as J50/3 and 14 at Gorton, as J50/4, between 1926 and 1939. The 30 GNR J23 locomotives from 1914-1919 were eventually re-classified by the LNER as J50/1s.

In 1946, the class received their LNER renumbering from 8890 to 8991, all surviving to nationalisation to receive their British Rail numbering in the 60000 range. Withdrawals started in September 1958 and were completed by 1963, with six transferred to departmental use afterwards. These locomotives survived until around May 1965, No. 68961 Departmental No. 14 being the last to go in September 1965.

No. 2793 was one of several locomotives that were built at Doncaster Works. It was part of an order of six J50 locomotives to the order number 318 and its works number was 1739. The locomotive entered service in April 1930 to start its duties as a reliable tank engine. As part of the LNER re-numbering scheme in 1946, 2793 became 8976. At the advent of BR nationalisation in January 1948, the locomotive was allocated to Annesley shed (ANN). A year later, in April 1949, BR renumbered the locomotive to 68976.

Throughout its working life, several shed reallocations took place where the locomotive was moved to Hornsey (34B), New England (34E) and finally Doncaster (36A) on 9th June 1962. An opulent crest is emblazoned on the body side.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_2102_3a54ed08-5dfc-495d-b374-2b025ed76c86.jpg?v=1742394504
hornby-tt3015m-class-50-gbrf-co-co-no-50049-defiance-diesel-locomotive
TT3015M Class 50 GBRf Co-Co No.50049 'Defiance' Diesel Locomotive

The Class 50 locomotives, built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows between 1967-1968 were the last purpose-designed mixed-traffic locomotive built in the UK. 50 examples were built in total. Upon their introduction they were used on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The aim was to speed-up passenger timings on the then non-electrified portion up to Glasgow, and to haul express passenger trains at 100 mph. By 1974, the entire line had been electrified so the locomotives were re-deployed to other regions as had been planned. When delivered, the Class 50s were leased to British Rail by a subsidiary of English Electric. They were later sold to the British Railways Board.

The Class 50s proved to be incredibly powerful, indeed following the full electrification of the WCML and the introduction of more powerful DMUs in the late 1980’s they were almost pointlessly powerful, and they began to be withdrawn as their roles were handed to more efficient DMUs. All examples of the Class were named which was rather unusual for corporate BR diesel locomotives, and in the end 18 examples have been preserved.

50007 started life as D407 in 1968, being named Hercules after a Royal Navy ship in 1978. The locomotive would go on to become Sir Edward Elgar in 1984, a name that it would keep into recent preservation, carrying it from withdrawal in 1991 until 2014 when it reclaimed its original name of Hercules. Hercules is now based at the Severn Valley Railway and is dual named as Warspite, one of its classmates that was scrapped in 1989.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_6624_49b58fb7-345f-42d3-8eb7-5165c8150fea.jpg?v=1747659399
