Another convention not followed by the V2 however was that of the wheel arrangement, with the V2 using the 2-6-2 ‘Prairie’ wheel arrangement which in Great Britian was generally the preserve of tank locomotives, with other ‘Big Four’ railway companies generally using the 4-6-0 formation for their larger mixed traffic machines. The 2-6-2 wheel arrangement accommodated a wide firebox, the same type used so successfully on Gresley’s Pacifics and P1/P2 ‘Mikados’, and whilst visually the V2s had many similarities to the Pacifics, their similarities to the P2s were in many ways their crowning features, including 6ft 2in driving wheels, v-fronted cab, and monobloc cylinder castings.

Four more locomotives emerged soon after ‘Green Arrow’, and such was their success that a further 179 were quickly ordered. Despite the outbreak of the Second World War, construction continued of what was to become an important contributor to the war effort. Whilst services such as the ‘Green Arrow’ goods trains were suspended in wartime, the V2s were employed plentifully moving goods, people, mail, parcels, troops and munitions far and wide. Their performances on lengthened passenger trains were notable, often hauling trains much heavier than what the class had been designed to haul, and at speed too. Such was their contribution to the British transport network between 1939 and 1945 that the V2s later became known to many as ‘the engines that won the war’.

Once peacetime returned, the V2s went back to hauling fast freight and passenger services across much of the LNER network. Many were deployed to the former Great Central routes and in Scotland and in both areas, the Class would become a stalwart until the final days of steam. Notable modifications made to the V2s during their operational years include the replacement of the monobloc casting with three separate cylinders – 71 engines were so treated between 1956 and the final withdrawals in 1966. Several types of chimneys were experimented with; one locomotive received a lipless single chimney and three others trialled separate versions including a double blast pipe borrowed from the LMS ‘Royal Scot’ 4-6-0s. Ultimately, the Kylchap exhaust was trialled and proved successful, so much so that it was recommended the entire class should be fitted, however the onset of dieselisation meant only five locomotives received the new exhaust and associated double chimney.

Withdrawals began in 1962 and in December 1966 the final V2 was taken out of service. Class pioneer ‘Green Arrow’ was one of the first locomotives to be withdrawn, however its future had already been secured as it was selected for preservation as part of the national collection and following withdrawal, ‘Green Arrow’ was restored at Doncaster Works. Returning to the mainline during the 1970s, ‘Green Arrow’ went on to be a popular performer on both the national network and heritage railways until 2008 when she was withdrawn from service with a boiler failure. Notwithstanding the work required to repair the boiler, it is a crack in the monobloc cylinder casting which is the greatest challenge that would need to be overcome if the locomotive were to be restored and returned to steam once again. Today, ‘Green Arrow’ can be found on display in the Danum Gallery, Library and Museum in its birthplace, Doncaster, where it is on loan from the National Railway Museum.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/611_f45a802e-15e3-4a86-9b9b-4341d04ebaab.jpg?v=1766495973
lner-v2-4843-kings-own-yorkshire-light-infantry-lner-lined-green-steam-locomotive-dcc-sound
372-611SF LNER V2 4843 'Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' LNER Lined Green Steam Locomotive - DCC Sound

Some twenty years since the V2 was first produced in N scale by Graham Farish, this all-new model of the LNER Mixed Traffic icon is made to standards not even dreamt of twenty years ago. In the UK, this was brought about by the Ministry of Munitions. From 1915, they took charge of the entire process of manufacturing armaments, which included the acquisition of the raw materials right through to the production of the finished artillery shells.

One of the Ministry’s greatest accomplishments was to set up a network of National Shell Filling Factories (NSFF), which packed the explosives into shell casings. Foremost amongst these was NSFF Chilwell, near Nottingham. By the end of its production in 1918, NSFF Chilwell had produced more than 19 million shells and employed over 8,000 workers.

The explosive packed into the shells by Chilwell and other factories was a mixture of TNT and ammonium nitrate called ‘amatol’, which was produced by mechanically mixing the two components and squeezing them into the shell casing; the ammonium nitrate and TNT they used was produced at other sites and transported by rail to Chilwell. Needless to say, this process was very hazardous, and on 1st July 1918 an accident occurred. This enormous explosion resulted in the deaths of 138 workers, with a further 250 injured.

In the latter part of the Great War, the Ministry of Munitions commissioned a new ammonium nitrate factory to be built at Swindon, which would facilitate the bulk transport of the chemical between Swindon and Chilwell. To accommodate the safe transfer of this volatile load, the Ministry ordered a fleet of 100 10-ton tank wagons from The Leeds Forge Company in 1916.

Ammonium nitrate is a tricky chemical to transport because it is a crystalline substance which absorbs water vapour and then sets hard like concrete, so there is potential for the load to set hard during transportation. To counter this problem, the wagon’s design featured an airtight tank to prevent water ingress. This door resembled a conventional dished tank barrel end and was designed to open like a smokebox door, with a hinge at the top.

The wagons were loaded through the two manholes on the top of the barrel and were emptied at Chilwell by releasing the end door and lifting them at the fixed end of the wagon to tip out the contents, which was further aided by the conical shape of the barrels. These were highly unusual wagons, as they appeared to be similar to their conventional liquid tank wagon counterparts but instead carried powder. They also featured underframes made from pressed steel components, which was a speciality of The Leeds Forge Company.

At the end of WW1, these wagons immediately became War Surplus and were disposed of as there was no need for any wagons to transport ammonium nitrate. They were subsequently converted into liquid-carrying tank wagons. This was done by securing the end door and fitting discharge facilities.

As almost brand-new wagons, they quickly found homes with several private companies. With these gradually changing hands over the years, they would appear across the country in an eclectic mix of guises.

No longer limited to ammonium nitrate, they were utilised by organisations such as the British Molasses Co., Derby Gas Company, Glasgow Corporation Chemical Works, British Sugar Corporation and the War Department, which sent them to the Longmoor Military Railway.

Another of these new owners was Chipman Chemicals. Tasked with weedkilling, Chipman’s created purpose-built trains that featured tank wagons filled with a chemical weedkilling solution. This was then sprayed as the train moved. Weedkilling trains featuring these vehicles were seen from the grouping era through to the 1960s. Tank wagons were generally long-lived vehicles, and the Leeds Forge tanks were no different. Many lasted in service into the early 1960s, surviving into the early modernisation era; two complete examples are now preserved at the Middleton Railway and the Leeds Industrial Museum.

These explosive new models are our first-ever tank wagon; they will have the usual wealth of full external and underframe detail and feature numerous tooling variants. Our new versions offer you more opportunities to run these unique trains by expanding your options of wagons even further.

The first new wagon type is the Wooden Coal Hopper. With these deep wagons, your narrow gauge railway will soon be prosperous.

These wagons aren’t limited to the transport of coal, of course. A wide variety of materials like stone, sand, metals, slate, china clay, scrap, ash and even manure were transported in these types of wagons, so they are perfect for a huge number of layouts.

Tank wagons came in all shapes and sizes, and it was not uncommon to see a narrow gauge railway with a handful of Rectangular Tank Wagons in its fleet. They could be utilised for any liquid imaginable, making them ideal for refuelling, water storage, hazardous liquids, or simply transporting vital supplies to a contractor's site or wartime front line.

The new Rectangular Tank Wagon range liveries cover common reasons for these to be used, plus some undesignated ones in different colours. They are going to look at home on your layout, no matter their purpose.

Last but by no means least is the Round-Ended Flat Wagon.

Flat-bed wagons were ideal for carrying any number of different loads, though common loads included boxes, sleepers, machinery and equipment. Variants on the design often included vertical end walls, which prevented lighter loads from shooting off the ends when braking or on inclines. Wagons like these were regularly used by the military to move munitions or by paper mills for stacks of paper.

We have included a crate as a load in each version, each carrying the livery of a different business or having the contents noted on the box label. The crate is separate from the wagon, so if you would prefer to fit your model with a different load or leave it empty, you can.

All the models from Batch 2 of the 009 Gauge ‘All-Purpose’ wagon range share a common underframe and are fitted with traditional NEM-compliant 009 'hook and loop' couplings, compatible with other manufacturers' designs.

Each of the new ‘All-Purpose’ wagon variants is available in a selection of colourful liveries, many of which match our previous All-Purpose-Wagon liveries.
