The units were built at BR's Derby Works from 1954 to 1955. The units were built in various formations, including 12 power-twin 2-car units, 84 power-trailer 2-car units, and four 4-car units. The first units were introduced on services around the West Riding of Yorkshire, namely Leeds to Bradford and Harrogate services from 14 June 1954. Subsequent units were introduced onto services in West Cumbria, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Newcastle to Middlesbrough, Edinburgh to Glasgow and, later, Birmingham to Sutton Coldfield, Bletchley to Buckingham and Banbury, and East London lines services. They were also the last units to run on the Anglesey Central Railway which closed to public traffic in 1964.
These units were an outstanding success, helping to reduce the operating costs of branchlines. Initially they also attracted many more passengers. Between February and October 1956 on the London Midland, they carried 800,000 more passengers than steam in the same period of 1955. The largest increases were on the Buckingham-Banbury, Birmingham-Lichfield, Bury-Bacup, Llandudno-Blaenau Ffestiniog and Manchester-Buxton routes. As such, British Railways ordered many more DMU vehicles from various builders over the next decade, thus helping to eliminate steam locomotives. However, as these units were non-standard compared to other later DMU vehicles, they were subject to early retirement. The last units were withdrawn from normal traffic in 1969, having clocked-up 15 years front line service.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_3456_4ded48d7-bc12-41c8-80ec-eb693d1cfa14.jpg?v=1732794345
bachmann-32-550d-lner-a1-60163-tornado-br-lined-green-late-crest
32-550D LNER A1 60163 'Tornado' BR Lined Green (Late Crest)

Expected Delivery Oct / Nov 2026 (Subject to Change at Manufacturer's Discretion).

60163 Tornado is a main line coal-fired steam locomotive built in Darlington, County Durham, England. Completed in 2008, Tornado was the first such locomotive built in the United Kingdom since Evening Star, the last steam locomotive built by British Railways in 1960. It is the only example of an LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotive in existence, the entirety of the original production batch having been scrapped without preservation. The locomotive's namesake is the Panavia Tornado, a combat aircraft flown by the Royal Air Force from 1979 to 2019. In April 2017, Tornado became the first steam locomotive to officially reach 100 mph in over 50 years on British tracks.

Construction of Tornado began in 1994, and was at Darlington Works for most of the project, while numerous components such as the boiler were manufactured elsewhere. The project was financed through fundraising initiatives such as public donations and sponsorship deals; further funding came from hiring out Tornado itself for special rail services. Construction was completed in 2008, and full certification of the locomotive was achieved in January 2009. Having been designed with compliance to modern safety and certification standards, Tornado has been conducting passenger services on the UK rail network and on mainline-connected heritage railways since 2008.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/32-550d-extra-large_0dc0ec4c-a482-41dc-b83e-b8b2c4d46c11.jpg?v=1748953594
bachmann-391-050-quarry-hunslet-0-4-0-alice-in-dinorwic-quarry-red-livery
391-050 Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0 'Alice' in Dinorwic Quarry Red livery

Expected Delivery Dec 2026 / Jan 2027 (Subject to Change at Manufacturer's Discretion).

For DCC Fitting, please use the following Bachmann Decoder 36-571

We are proud to present the stunning Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 Scale model of Quarry Hunslet Steam Locomotive ‘Alice’ in Dinorwic Quarry Red livery. Because of their usefulness, 105 were built, 95 being built at Nine Elms Works with the remaining ten built at Eastleigh Works.
