was a class of 52 express passenger steam locomotives built for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. The first locomotive of the class was built in 1930 and the last in 1934. The class was based on the chassis of the Royal Scot combined with the boiler from Large Claughtons earning them the nickname Baby Scots. A total of 18 were rebuilt to create the LMS Rebuilt Patriot Class between 1946 and 1948; thereafter those not subjected to rebuilding were often referred to as the Unrebuilt Patriot Class. These remaining 34 unrebuilt engines were withdrawn between 1960 and 1962.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNone of the class survive in preservation, and as a result, the LMS Patriot Project was founded to recreate a new locomotive to the LMS design, thus closing this gap in the story of LMS express power. A new 'Patriot' will provide the link between the 'Royal Scot' and 'Jubilee' classes. This will be numbered 5551 and named 'The Unknown Warrior.' The replica is being built to main line standards and will be the new National Memorial Engine, making a unique contribution for Remembrance - a permanent memorial to all fallen servicemen and women. The design was a success from the start and by 1962 a total of 127 had been built. With the introduction of the TOPS code system in 1968 the diesels were designated Class 20 and renumbered 20 001 to 20 228. The Class 20's worked over the Eastern, London Midland and Scottish regions as well as into Wales and were commonly associated with coal traffic. The engines from the outside contractors differed from the original batch only in having Drummond style number plates (the originals having the McIntosh type) and three link couplings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first 17 locomotives were officially mixed traffic locomotives but were turned out in the distinctive Caledonian blue livery. With the introduction of the Class 66s at the end of the century and coupled with a decline in EWS heavy freight traffic, several Class 60s were put into store and the future of the fleet was uncertain at times. However, a number of locomotives were retained as the heaviest trains could not be hauled by a single Class 66 and instead required the superior power of a Class 60.
