Whilst the line was built to transport minerals, in order to obtain its Light Railway Order it had to agree to offer a passenger service and for this, four Bogie Coaches were ordered from the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. Ltd. The coaches were purpose built but ran on bogies from ex-War Department Wagons that had been purchased as Army surplus. When passenger services ceased in 1936, the coaches were put into store and were later used as stands at the railway company’s sports ground. Coaches No. 1 and 2 were later sold to the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway. No. 4 is now owned by the Golden Valley Light Railway, based at the Midland Railway – Butterley, whilst No. 3 was scrapped.

Highlights

both bodyside window configurations tooled for

flush-glazed

correct window corner radii

fully detailed interior with partitions

saloon tables

lavatories appropriate to prototype

fully decorated seating painted in accurate colours

exquisite underframe detailing

finely mounded brake details

4 sets of very finely moulded queen post truss rodding and turnbuckles

Dynamos and battery boxes fitted to the SE&CR composite as prototype

Dynamos fitted to the SR / BR Composite and the Brake Third as per prototype

all new well detailed 8ft Heavy Fox coil spring bolster bogies

metal wheels sets and pin point axles running in metal bearings

Detachable couplings in NEM pockets

close coupling mechanism

Separately applied fittings include:

roof vents

vacuum pipes

handrails

grab handles

lamp irons and brake control apparatus (Brake coaches only)

History

Sixty-two 60ft three coach ‘birdcage’ sets were introduced by the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR) between 1912 and 1915. Designed by William Stroudley, 50 members of the class were built in 1872 and between 1874 and 1880, all at Brighton Works. The class has received several nicknames, initially being known as "Rooters" by their south London crews. However, the engines were more famously known as "Terriers" on account of the distinctive 'bark' of the exhaust beat.

Originally known as 'A' class, these diminutive tank locomotives were designed in 1870 to haul commuter trains on the heavily congested lines in South and South-East London. These included routes from London Bridge to both East and West Croydon, London Victoria to Sutton and the line from Victoria to London Bridge via Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill, as well as operating on the East London Railway under the Thames through the Thames Tunnel designed by Marc Isambard Brunel. Six locomotives were built for these services during 1872, and were successful thanks to their high acceleration between the closely spaced station stops and the use of lightweight trains. A further 44 were built between June 1874 and September 1880 to complement the original six.

They were distributed across most of the GWR network and, after nationalisation of the railways in 1948, across the British Railways Western Region, and also other regions.

FEATURES:

Sprung metal buffers

Die cast Running plate for extra quality and weight

Complete with firebox glow and flicker

Sprung metal coupling hook and screw coupling

Etched plates where applicable

Finely moulded body with many separately added fine details

Cast profiled wheels with fine relief and appropriate colouring

Tungsten chassis and all wheel pick up

Powerful 5 pole skew wound motor with refined slow running control

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_1347_217792c0-357d-4ff2-84f3-a15e44b6d2a7.jpg?v=1709208481
graham-farish-372-400a-lner-j39-with-stepped-tender-4761-lner-black-lner-original
372-400A LNER J39 with Stepped Tender 4761 LNER Black (LNER Original)

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Class J39 was a medium powered 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed for mixed traffic work throughout the former LNER system between London and the north of Scotland.
