The first 17 locomotives were built at the Caledonian’s St. Rollox works during 1899 (Nos. 812 - 828). A further 12 were built at St. Rollox later that year.

At the turn of the last century the Caledonian found itself to be short of engines suitable for mineral traffic. With St. Rollox fully committed to other work, it turned to three outside contractors (Neilson Reid, Sharp Stewart and Dübs) to build 50 more engines between them using the Class 812 drawings, orders being placed on December 29th1898. The engines from the outside contractors differed from the original batch only in having Drummond style number plates (the originals having the McIntosh type) and three link couplings.

The first 17 locomotives were officially mixed traffic locomotives but were turned out in the distinctive Caledonian blue livery. Some had Westinghouse pumps and screw link couplings to enable them to be used on passenger services. The remaining members of the class spent much of their time working coal and other mineral trains around Scotland. Under LMS ownership after 1923, the class were painted in black livery and lost their Westinghouse pumps.

The first of the class was withdrawn in 1946 and the last in 1963. No.828 is the sole survivor having been earmarked for preservation by the Caledonian Railway 828 Trust for display at the Glasgow Museum of Transport then located in a former Glasgow Corporation Tram Depot. It was restored at Cowlairs Works during 1966 and painted in Caledonian Railway blue.

It was the long-term ambition of the owners to restore the locomotive to full working order and in October 1980 it was moved to the Strathspey Railway where it was rebuilt. Returning to steam in 1992 and to operational traffic in 1993 where it is currently in use.

The locomotive is due major works attention in 2020. As these waggons tend to run in long rakes, the models have semi-permanent close-couplings fitted in their NEM pockets. These can be pulled out with fine nosed pliers and replaced with conventional OO-9 hoop-and-loop couplings (supplied) at each end of the rake. We plan to make the close couplers available as a separate item in due course. Roughly one in five waggons was fitted with brakes. These were spread throughout the train and turned so the brake handles were all on the same side of the train, pointing towards Porthmadog on the Ffestiniog Railway. The waggons are being offered in a set containing one braked and two unbraked. Each waggon carries its own specific markings and running number. The sets are made up with a random selection of running numbers. Each waggon is fitted with a removable slate load, which is conveniently hollow, thus giving the modeller the added option of including some further weight if required.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_1138_8ea6658d-f15d-4d8c-9c65-ada778e70d76.jpg?v=1701356495
peco-gr-331-hudson-rugga-3-grey-009
GR331 Pack of 3 Hudson "Rugga" V-Skip Wagons - Grey

GR331 The familiar "Rugga" V-Skip "tipping" wagon design was introduced in the 1930s, a development of the Robert Hudson company, based in Leeds. They could be supplied to the customer's specific requirements, with a skip size ranging from 13.5 to 54 cubic feet (0.38 to 1.53 cubic metres), and in most track gauges.The design allows the skip to tip in either direction, perfect for small industrial railways that needed to move and unload materials quickly and efficiently. The company even boasted that at any one time several thousand could be supplied from stock! Now, we (and even Peco) won't claim here to have "several thousands in stock" but what we can tell you is that they are supplied in an attractive display box of three. The models, in keeping with Peco's previous OO-9 offerings, are extremely free-wheeling and come complete with integral OO-9 couplers allowing prototypical close coupling.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0225/2858/9896/files/IMG_6180_27fcb4b0-f7d3-4322-aee0-9d44870b3d01.jpg?v=1697188697
peco-gr-400a-peco-gr-400a-1st3rd-class-composite-coach-in-lb-livery-no-5
GR400A 1st/3rd class Composite Coach in l&B Livery No. 5

These finely detailed ready to run coaches and wagons are accurately modelled on the rolling stock of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, both as an independent railway and after its' absorption into the Southern railway in 1922.
