(202.8 km/h) on Stoke Bank on the East Coast Mainline and therefore obtained the World Speed record for a steam locomotive, a record that is still unbeaten to this day. During the locomotive trials of 1948 the then fledging British Railways Board experimented with different locomotives to see how they performed on tracks outside their normal region.
